When Was Ford Established?
While working on a four-wheeled vehicle, Henry Ford invented the term "quadricycle." The Detroit Car Manufacturer, which he created in 1899, was his first foray into the car production industry. Despite this, the firm was dissolved in 1901 and renamed the Henry Ford Corporation. After a rift with his investors in 1902, Henry Ford walked away from the firm with just his name & $800 in his pocket. That's probably a lot of money back in 1902.
Finally getting around to starting a second automaker, Henry Ford went to an old acquaintance, Alexander Y. Malcomson, for help. Ford and Malcomson, a partnership formed, developed an automobile, and started purchasing components for it. It became clear that the funds were running low, and the manufacturing company was clamoring for payment. Malcomson turned to his relative, John Gray, the chairman of the German-American banking group, for help. For the first time, he proposed a merger between Ford Motor Company and Malcomson & Ford.
As a result, Ford Motor Corporation was founded in 1903 with a capitalization of $1,000,000 and shares owned by 12 investors. Notwithstanding some stockholders' concerns, the motor firm was instantly profitable. When Ford & Malcomson argued over the firm's future, there had been internal divergences, and Malcomson was forced out of the firm when Gray stood with Ford. Gray transferred his shares to Ford, who became the firm's president after Gray's death in 1906. So, Ford Motor Corporation had a rocky start to its existence.
When Did Ford Begin Manufacturing Automobiles in Other Countries?
It wasn't until 1904 when Ford of Canada was founded, that Ford became a truly multinational corporation. It wasn't until 1911, though, that the firm truly began to spread its wings over the globe. In 1917, they began operating plants in Britain and France. Several more countries quickly followed. By 1925, factories had already been established in Japan, Africa, and Australasia, amongst other locations. During the 1920s, Ford produced half of all automobiles in the United States and 40 percent of all British vehicles. There were more than half a million Model Ts in the USA at the time.
